Seat Leon 1P 170 TDI – Tuning Box vs Software

Back once again with another Seat Leon MK2 (1P) 170 TDI. We know these in and out having worked on more than our fair share of them. What was interesting though was the customer was coming to us with a tuning box pre-installed. We thought it would be good to do some testing to see how much better our software is in comparison to said tuning box.

Standard

After a full diagnaostic scan using industry leading VCDS, the 9 year old Leon was in perfect health condition. On with the initial testing then as a standard car.

Power170bhp
Torque350nm
0-60mph7.6sec
30-50mph2.8sec
50-80mph6.0sec
0-100mphN/A

Race Chip Tuning Box

It’s safe to say, we aren’t big fans of tuning boxes, big claims and little deliverey is often our findings. None the less, this was in the means of testing so why not. Plugging in to only the fuel rail and connecting to the battery for power it was re-installed.

Power???
Torque???
0-60mph7.0sec
30-50mph2.6sec
50-80mph5.4sec
0-100mphN/A

Software

Installing software may only take a matter of minutes to flash but it is direct to the ECU. Unlike the tuning box which manipulates 1 signal to the fuel rail, you have an ECU full of new reference tables perfectly calibrated.

Power215bhp
Torque415nm
0-60mph6.7sec
30-50mph2.5sec
50-80mph5.1sec
0-100mph15.6sec

The customer noticed straight away after installing the software how much of a difference he could feel with the pick up and pull right through to the redline. We then went on to confirm it using an industry standard RaceLogic GPS box, The difference in times is clear to see.
